Fat man in NYC

With an extra charge of 18 percent sales tax on sugary sodas and juice drinks New York administration hopes to fight back on the ever rising obesity.

The tax is estimated to decrease soda consumption by 5 % and to raise over $400 million per year for health programs.

Marion Nestle, professor of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University comments: “It’s an interesting experiment and one that’s worth trying.
The theory behind this approach is that it worked for cigarettes, and that soft drinks are demonstrably related to obesity in children.”

These statistics show that there definitely is room to cut back on soda:

  • Soda pops account for more than a quarter of all drinks consumed in the United States.
  • More than 15 billion gallons were sold in 2000.
  • This works out to at least one 12-ounce can per day for every man, woman and child.
  • For every soft drink or sugar-sweetened beverage a child drinks every day, their obesity risk appears to jump 60%.
  • About 65% of adolescent girls and 74% of adolescent boys consume soft drinks daily.

But not all voices are positive about the new “fat tax”.
