Did you spend too much this holiday season or make a resolution to be more frugal in the new year? Don’t let pinching pennies get in the way of snuggling with your sweetheart–here are some fun date ideas for cavorting around the Big Apple without spending a dime:

  • Scope out holiday window displays: Hurry now and catch the department stores’ festive windows before they come down (typically by Jan. 15). Bergdorf Goodman, Barney’s, Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, Lord and Taylor, and Saks Fifth Avenue all put a lot of creative effort into whimsical, dazzling scenes–some will evoke your inner five-year-old, others take a more daring, artistic approach.
  • Attend wine and spirits tastings: Many of the wine and liquor stores in NYC have regular tastings free of charge, and usually a discount is offered on bottles of the wine being samlped. Astor Wines & Spirits, Bottlerocket Wine & Spirit, and Crush Wine & Spirits are just a few with tasting calendars online. Also, every Tuesday night, East Village bar Louis 649 offers complimentary tastings of a different spirit every week.
  • Volunteer together: Do something new in the city and make a difference in the lives of others by participating in a volunteer project. There are hundreds of non-profit groups and volunteer organizations in NYC that offer ways to give back with varying levels of commitment. New York Cares, Volunteer NYC, and Big Brothers Big Sisters NYC are just a few places to start looking for fulfilling projects.
  • Get your “om” on: Was the holiday season stressful for you and your partner? Take a deep breath and enjoy a relaxing change of pace with a free yoga class. Many studios offer complimentary classes for first-time students, while Yoga to the People offers a full schedule of donation-only yoga classes at three locations in the city, including hot yoga.
  • Friday nights at MoMA: You and your mate might enjoy looking at each other, but there’s lots of beauty to appreciate at the Museum of Modern Art. Thanks to Target, Friday nights from 4 to 8 p.m. are free at MoMA. The Tim Burton exhibit, running through April 26, is a must-see.
