Crispy tofu at Dirt Candy.
Meatless and dairy-free dining in NYC doesn’t have to mean bland tofu and brown rice. Vegans, vegetarians, and health-conscious eaters have plenty of dining options in Gotham that will even make carnivores drool. Here’s a few of the city’s best:
Angelica Kitchen: This popular, longstanding East Village restaurant takes a creative approach to vegan and vegetarian dining. Settle into the warm, laid-back atmosphere and dine on walnut lentil “pâté” and filling dragon bowls: mixes of grains, sea veggies, and your choice of dressing. (Note: cash only, BYOB.) 300 E. 12th St.
Blossom: An upscale haven in Chelsea, this all-organic, vegan restaurant is where anything-but-”granola” vegans go for date night. From seitan scaloppine to a soy bacon cheeseburger to crispy Thai tofu, Blossom’s menu covers a range of ethnic influences. (Note: open for lunch on weekends only; dinner daily.) 187 9th Ave.
Pure Food and Wine: Serving only raw vegetarian and vegan food, nothing in this candlelit restaurant is heated over 118 degrees. You can tell by the bright smiles and boundless energy of the staff that they are onto something here–try the tomato lasagna (tofu ricotta, tomatoes, zucchini, and raw pesto) and you might become a raw convert as well. 54 Irving Pl.
Counter: This East Village vegetarian bistro offers seasonal dishes along with an extensive organic wine and cocktail list. Flatbread pizzas, a mushroom burger, and cauliflower risotto are popular choices. 105 1st Ave.
Wild Ginger: The vegetarian (mostly vegan) Pan-Asian menu is a hit at this cozy Nolita date spot. Carnivores won’t miss the real thing in dishes such as General Tso’s soy chicken and Malaysian curry stew. 380 Broome St.
Dirt Candy: At this trendy East Village vegetarian restaurant, flavor is key, while healthfulness is less of a priority. Whimsical dishes such as jalapeno hush puppies with maple butter, kimchi doughnuts with watermelon radishes, and parsnip gnocchi are rich and delicious, but may not slim your waistline. 490 E. 9th St.
Gobo: Japanese for “Burdock root,” Gobo is a Southeast Asian vegetarian and vegan restaurant with two locations in NYC. The Zen atmosphere complements the innovative cuisine here, from refreshing juices to dishes such as Vietnamese spring rolls and green tea noodles with vegan Bolognese sauce. 401 6th Ave. and 1426 3rd Ave.

Thanks for this post. It seems there’s a good choice of places to eat out in NYC for veggies and vegans… Certainly on a par with London, I’d say. I’ve not tried eating at any of these in NYC but they do sound great.. especially “Blossom”. My favourite vegan restaurant currently still has to be VeggieWorld here in the UK… at least until I venture over to the USA and try out some of these ones that is.
