How is your home liquor stash doing these days? Have you graduated from pouring shots from the lone tequila or whiskey bottle to having a full-blown selection ready to be shaken up into cocktails as seen on Mad Men? First, get yourself a beginner’s guide to mixing drinks, such as “The Essential Cocktail” by Dale “King Cocktail” DeGroff, and then head to these NYC purveyors to find the tools you’ll need to impress your thirsty friends:

Astor Wines & Spirits: While NYC is spoiled with lots of wine and spirits stores, Astor keeps its shelves stocked with many hard-to-find spirits, such as St. Germain elderflower liqueur,  newly-launched Ransom Old Tom Gin, and a selection of absinthe. The staff here are especially knowledgeable and helpful. 399 Lafayette St.

Chef Restaurant Supply: This is where bar and restaurant industry professionals shop, so act like you’re in the “biz” and you might score a wholesale price on your next cocktail shaker, muddler, tiki mugs, or even bar stools. 294 Bowery

Kalustyan’s: Mixing drinks that call for orange flower water, kaffir lime leaves, or something even more rare, like candied rose petals? This massive ethnic supermarket, a favorite among local bartenders, offers a wide array of spices, bitters, preserved fruits and pickles, teas, honeys, syrups, and other exotic ingredients. 123 Lexington Ave.

Sur La Table: Although mainly a cooking supply store, Sur La Table has a small but quality selection of bar tools and accessories, such as silicone ice cube trays and citrus juicers. 75 Spring St.

Bowery Kitchen Restaurant Equipment & Supplies: Located inside Chelsea Market (its Bowery has closed), this kitchen supply store carries lots of bartender tools, such as cocktail shakers, muddlers, strainers, and bottle openers. Plus, it’s right next to Food Network’s headquarters, so you there’s a chance you’ll run into a star chef. 88 10th Ave.

Crate & Barrel: When it comes to serving your drinks with style, Crate & Barrel offers a large selection of elegant glassware and serving accessories, as well as bar tools. 611 Broadway and 650 Madison Ave.
